Here are some key contacts within ALMR.
Kate Nicholls has worked with the ALMR since 1997, initially as an external consultant and subsequently as Strategic Affairs Director. After gaining a degree in English and post-graduate law diploma, she worked as a researcher in the House of Commons and European Parliament. She first joined the industry with Whitbread, working as Government Relations Manager within the Strategic Affairs Department. She was Account Director at one of the largest independent public affairs companies, before establishing her own political consultancy in 2000.
Kate is a yoga devotee, and has just started to train as a yoga teacher. She also plays piano, flute and sings in the local choir.
Rupert joined the ALMR as the Chief Operating Office in June. Prior to this, he worked for 19 years at Heineken UK covering a number of key leadership roles spanning Supply Chain & Logistics, Commercial, Leadership Capability and Sales director. Previously Rupert ran the Head Office logistical support for Raleigh International’s annual expeditions across 5 countries. Additionally, Rupert has retail management roles in businesses in both the UK & Australia as well as achieving a 1st class degree (Hons) in Anthropology.
Rupert is an avid supporter of many sports including cricket & hockey (still plays just). His real passion is Rugby Union (a retired U21 Anlgo Scott & London Scottish team member as well as Eastern Suburbs, Australia) & is a qualified junior team coach. Father of 3, he relaxes by cooking for his family.
Tony Sophoclides is a public affairs and media specialist, with a background in consultancy, as well as working for more than eight years in Parliament and a spell as a lobbyist on Capitol Hill, Washington DC.
He gained a MA (Hons) Distinction in Diplomatic Studies and a BA(Hons) in Politics, Philosophy and Economics, before working as a researcher for a number of backbench MPs and then as political adviser to a Deputy Prime Minister. He has an in-depth understanding of the dynamics and machinery of Westminster, Whitehall and the media, from a position of Government and Opposition.
Tony is a school governor and father of two adult daughters. He enjoys live music but his own attempts to play the guitar and double bass are yet to attract a paying audience.
David Sheen joined the ALMR in April 2017. Prior to this he worked for over 12 years for the British Beer & Pub Association, covering a range of issues for brewers and pub owners and operators. His expertise spans a range of taxes relevant to the sector – from business rates, to excise duty and VAT, as well as environmental and employment taxes. David has also worked on licensing and general alcohol policy issues. He has also edited the BBPA’s Statistical Handbook and worked to promote the economic value of the sector.
David is a keen supporter of the licensed trade in his spare time and is on an odyssey to visit as many pubs as he (responsibly) can. He is a recently retired mediocre cricketer and football keeper, who now enjoys both sports from the sidelines. David has a young daughter who is almost certainly destined to be a genius or a pub operator, or both.
Maria Bob joined the ALMR in 2011. She has a degree in Psychology and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2005. Before joining the ALMR she worked as a Management Accountant for local based companies. She is responsible for preparing and maintaining management accounts and reporting financial information to the ALMR board of directors. She is the mother of two energetic boys and in her little spare time she likes to go to the gym, play tennis and swim.
Lina Olea joined the ALMR in 2015 after completing her MBA from an International Business School in Shanghai. She has experience in marketing and communications in Australia and United States from a range of industries. She is responsible for membership recruitment and retention with a particular focus on retailers. She ensures members get to hear about our networking events and take advantage of all the benefits of the ALMR.
Lina has lived in 9 cities in 7 different countries, so it is safe to say she enjoys exploring the world. She aims at visiting a new place every year.
Chris Banks joined the ALMR in 2013 as Administrative Assistant before becoming Communications and PR Executive later that year. After completing his undergraduate degree in Film Studies he moved to Australia for two years where he worked for the South Australian Government and completed a Master’s Degree in Journalism. Chris liaises regularly with the press and keeps the Association and its members up to date with the latest news. In his spare time Chris likes going to gigs, watching and playing sport and watching as many films as he can. Chris also regularly contributes to a Scottish film website and is researching a screenplay on the subject of fox hunting.
Sophie joined The ALMR in March 2016.
